One Man’s Trash Dan Colen at Karma

When the artist Dan Colen was working on “Trash,” a series of paintings made with and from New York City’s finest, garbage just kept building up in his studio, like garbage tends to do. Colen assumed that the leftover paint-encrusted tires, rusted cans, busted shoes and dismembered bicycle parts would eventually be kicked back to the curb whence they came. But after some time, they took on a life of their own, culminating in “Blowin’ in the Wind,” a short-lived (as in 48 hours) and aptly titled show at Gagosian Gallery on the Upper East Side. Starting March 1, a selection of pieces will be on display at Karma, the graphic designer Brendan Dugan’s bookstore-cum-guerrilla gallery on Downing Street in the West Village. Meanwhile, Colen remains philosophical about this found body of work. “I don’t know if it’s good or bad art,” he says. “But there’s a possibility of truth to it.”
